What happens when tap shoes, mistaken identities, and a Cole Porter score set sail all at once? Anything Goes at Altarena Playhouse delivers a delightful dose of classic musical theatre charm, where romance, comedy, and show-stopping numbers collide on the high seas. With its witty book and timeless songs like “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “You’re the Top,” the show reminds us why Golden Age musicals continue to hold such enduring appeal.
Set aboard the S.S. American, the story follows a whirlwind of disguises, love triangles, and comedic mishaps, all unfolding with buoyant energy and theatrical flair. Altarena’s production leans into the joy and spectacle of the piece, inviting audiences to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
As a show that isn’t produced all that often, I was especially excited to attend. While not every Golden Age musical has aged seamlessly, Anything Goes still carries a sense of whimsy that makes for a genuinely joyful evening of entertainment, without much of the baggage that can accompany other classics.

The shining star of this production for me was Seana Nicol as Reno Sweeney, a bold and glamorous showgirl who finds love in the most unexpected way. Nicol was completely dynamic in the role, commanding the audience’s attention in every number she performed. Her strong dance ability, paired with a powerful, belty vocal performance, made for a portrayal that truly blew me away.
Another standout was Dan Kolodny as Moonface Martin, who left a lasting impression with his impeccable comedic timing. His performance was filled with genuine laugh-out-loud moments, capturing a style that felt wonderfully reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals. He brought a lightness and charm that kept the audience consistently entertained.

A huge shoutout must go to the live orchestra, led by Armando Fox. Small but mighty, they served as a constant reminder of just how iconic a Cole Porter score can be when played with precision and energy.
Another standout was the wide array of costumes designed by Jenn Stephens. Reno’s looks were undoubtedly my favorite, but the ensemble also dazzled with a vibrant spectrum of colors that brought the stage to life.
Tom Curtin’s set design was equally charming, capturing the essence of a cruise ship with thoughtful detail. I especially appreciated how every corner of the stage was utilized, creating a dynamic and engaging environment throughout.
I highly recommend checking out this production while it’s running—especially if you’re a fan of classic musical theatre.
Anything Goes runs through April 26 and tickets are available here.
